Welcome!
For the second year in a row, I traveled
to Estipac, Jalisco, Mexico, with Dr. Melanie Davenport to present
an animation workshop
to the students and faculty of this small rural school. Seventeen
participants worked with
us for one week to produce a 3-D stopmotion short representing the
story of The Drum Celebration, a yearly tradition in the
Huichol community.
Among the participants were two faculty
members, five college-level teacher
preparation students, and several high
school students. Half of the group were
Wixaritari (Huichol) from the Zona Huichola
north of Guadalajara. These students took charge of interpreting
the story, writing the
script, creating the storyboard, recording
the dialogue in their own language, and
assisting with translation.
Six of the workshop participants had
worked
with us last year and were able to
demonstrate what they had learned to other
new group members, which was very
gratifying for us to see. With the enthusiastic assistance of all
the dedicated participants,
this complex story with 25 distinct scenes
was completed just in time for a public
viewing on our last evening in Estipac. |

Por el segundo año consecutivo tuve la oportunidad de viajar
en compañía de la Dra. Melanie Davenport a Estipac,
Jalisco (México), donde realizamos un taller de animación
para estudiantes y profesores
de CRES. Trabajamos con diecisiete participantes
durante una semana, durante la cual produjimos
un cortometraje con animación 3-D stop motion relatando la
historia de“La Fiesta del Tambor”, una celebración
tradicional de la comunidad Huichol.
El grupo de participantes fue conformado por
dos profesores, cinco estudiantes universitarios y estudiantes de
secundaria. La mitad de los participantes pertenecen al grupo Wixaritari
(Huichol) de la zona Huichola al norte de Guadalajara. Estos estudiantes
se encargaron de la interpretación de la historia, escritura
del guion, creación de la historieta, grabación de
los diálogos en su misma lengua y la traducción de
los mismos.
Seis de los participantes en este taller habían
trabajado con nosotras el año pasado y pudieron demostrar
a los otros participantes lo que habían aprendido el año
anterior, lo cual fue muy gratificante para nosotras. Con el gran
entusiasmo de todos los participantes, esta compleja historia con
veinticinco escenas diferentes fue finalizada justo a tiempo para
la presentación en público durante la última
noche de nuestra estadía en Estipac.
